1. (C) Poland supports the U.S. approach on the Tehran
Research Reactor (reftel),but questions how long the
international community must continue to wait for Iranian
authorities to respond more positively to Western engagement
on the nuclear issue. Grzegorz Olszak, Chief of the MFA's
Arab States and Iran office, said Warsaw's position on Iran's
nuclear program remained firm and broadly supportive of the
United States. Poland preferred to use diplomacy to resolve
the issue but was prepared to back tougher UN sanctions
against Iran, as well as within the EU, if diplomatic efforts
failed.
2. (C) BIO NOTE: Olszak informed us that Poland's new
Charge d'Affaires at its embassy in Tehran, Piotr Kozlowski,
was scheduled to arrive there next month. Kozlowski is one
of Poland's foremost experts on Arab and Iranian issues and
one of our lead contacts on Iran. In general, MFA officials
pride themselves for having maintained Iranian confidence in
their role as an honest broker despite Warsaw's relatively
tough, pro-Western stance on human rights and sanctions.
