1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page stories on Tuesday morning
included a meeting on Monday among senior officials
from the GOJ and the ruling DPJ, during which the
participants agreed to double the number of advisers to
the prime minister.
2. "Yemen Must Not Become Safe Haven for Terrorists"
The liberal Tokyo Shimbun editorialized (1/12): "It is
especially shocking that 'Al Qaeda in the Arabian
Peninsula,' based in Yemen, targeted the U.S. In Yemen,
terrorist groups are expanding their power by taking
advantage of the prolonged political unrest and the
fight between government troops and antigovernment
forces, which are backed by poor people.... Concern is
mounting rapidly within the U.S. government that 'Yemen
may become another battlefield in addition to Iraq and
Afghanistan.' An international conference will be held
on January 28 in the UK, a former colonial master of
Yemen. Swift international coordination is necessary to
devise measures to deal with poverty that will prevent
hotbeds of terrorism from being created. Coordination
in exchanging information about terrorists is also
needed."
