MISSION IN HAITI (MINUSTAH)
REF: A. SECSTATE 12558
B. STOCKHOLM 0068
C. STOCKHOLM 0053
Poloff delivered Ref A points February 17 to Carl Magnus
Ericsson, Deputy Director of the MFA's International Security
Department. Ericsson responded that he was surprised to
learn that there was still a request for more military troops
for Haiti as the Swedish UN Mission had reported some 2,000
troops had already been pledged. As for Swedish civilian
contributions, three police officers and four prison officers
have are currently being vetted by UNDPKO (Ref C); if cleared
by UNDPKO, they would deploy as part of a DPKO "second wave"
in the near future. Ericsson also noted Sweden's very
substantial financial support to relief operations (third
largest total amount, after the United States and Canada).
As for military troops, Sweden is stretched a bit tight right
now, having just sent an additional 30 to Afghanistan to
complement the 500 already on the ground (Ref C). (Note: The
Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency also currently has some 30
people in Haiti participating in various relief teams.)
