¶1. (C) Emboffs delivered reftel points to Gufran Al-Nadaf,
Deputy Director for the Gulf Section, and Ulf Samuelsson,
Iran Desk Officer, at the Swedish MFA on January 14.
Al-Nadaf thanked us for the information and said that Sweden,
along with the EU, had released numerous statements on the
human rights situation in Iran in recent months. Al-Nadaf
highlighted, in particular, the EU statement from December 1
calling for the release of Kian Tajbakhsh. Al-Nadaf also
said that the Swedes raised the issue of the three American
hikers with the Iranian Ambassador in Sweden and called for
their release. Both Al-Nadaf and Samuelsson emphasized their
continuing concern about all of these cases.
