1. (SBU) On January 26, Jun Ji-Sun, Deputy Director of the
United Nations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade (MOFAT),told Poloff that the Republic of Korea
(ROK) will send an interagency survey team to Haiti January
29 to assess humanitarian requirements. The survey team will
be led by Shin Dong-Ik, Director General of the International
Organizations Division of MOFAT, and will include officials
from the Ministry of National Defense (MND) and Jun herself.
2. (SBU) Jun estimated that the ROK peacekeeping mission to
Haiti will consist of just over 200 troops, pending approval
by the National Assembly. MOFAT will likely submit the
request to dispatch a peacekeeping force to Haiti in early
February.
3. (C) The Navy is also exploring the possibility of sending
an Amphibious Transport Ship with a complement of UH1H
helicopters to Haiti.
