1. (U) Economic Counselor presented points in reftel to
Deputy Minister of Finance for Economic Affairs Sulaiman
Al-Turki during a January 25 meeting. Al-Turki said the
Saudi government is monitoring the situation closely and
noted that the international community's response was
"overwhelming." While Al-Turki did not identify a specific
Saudi contribution, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman
announced the same day that the Kingdom would give $50
million for Haiti relief through the United Nations. Post
will continue to discuss this issue with Saudi officials and
inform the Department of any further substantive response.
