ASSK Eager to Discuss Party Business
--------------
1. (C) National League for Democracy (NLD) spokesman Nyan
Win told us February 25 that he and the other lawyers for
Aung San Suu Kyi (ASSK) met with her February 24 from 1 to 3
p.m. According to Nyan Win, ASSK, who appeared to be in fine
health, discussed party structure and activities at length.
She talked with Nyan Win about the recent Central Executive
Committee (CEC) expansion and a reorganization of the
information committee and advised that the party should
create a regular NLD newsletter to inform members about party
developments. ASSK reportedly was happy to hear a compromise
had been reached regarding composition of the party's Central
Committee. (Note: Comprised of 80-120 NLD members from
throughout Burma, the Central Committee will represent the
second tier of NLD leadership, though its substantive duties
remain unclear.)
Expresses Support for U Tin Oo
--------------
2. (C) ASSK asked Nyan Win to tell U Tin Oo she supports
his policy stance (presumably his support for the
Shwegondaing Declaration),which she had heard via radio
interviews. When asked about the pending request for a
meeting between ASSK and the CEC, Nyan Win said there have
been "no improvements."
No Word from Supreme Court
--------------
3. (C) Nyan Win said the Supreme Court has been silent
about when it will issue a verdict in ASSK's appeal. He went
to the Supreme Court yesterday but was told that all
officials were in Nay Pyi Taw. Nyan Win said he is scheduled
to appear in court March 4 for a hearing on the temporary
injunction imposed by ASSK brother Aung San Oo's legal
representative, which halted the renovations to her house.
ASSK Likely to Meet Doctor, Lawyers Next Week
--------------
4. (C) Nyan Win expects to meet ASSK again the week of
March 1 to get her approval on legal documents relating to a
separate property case involving her first cousin, Khin Maung
Aye, who lays claim to a portion of ASSK's residential
compound. He also told us he believes Dr. Tin Myo Win (aka
Douglas) will meet ASSK at her residence March 4 for the
routine "first Thursday of the month" visit.
