1. (C/NF) In a discussion with PolMinCouns on January 22,
Director General for the Middle East and the Maghreb John Holmes of
the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said that
he had once again raised the six Amcit cases in Iran (reftels) with
the Iranian Charge d'Affaires in Ottawa on January 20. During
their meeting (which the Iranian CDA has requested to complain
about Canada's human rights resolution on Iran),DG Holmes reminded
the CDA about Canada's shared concern over these consular cases and
the need to resolve them expeditiously. The CDA confessed that,
after he had reported the December 23 Canadian demarche, he had
received instructions to deliver a sharp rebuttal, indicating that
the subject was "none of Canada's business" and that Iran was "not
happy" that Canada was pursuing this issue "on behalf of another
country." The CDA admitted that he had decided simply not to
deliver the demarche. He further noted that he continued to pursue
the resolution of these consular cases "through other channels,"
but could not provide any news of progress.
