1. (SBU) PolCouns conveyed to Ministry of External Affairs
Joint Secretary for Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran (PAI) Division
the nonpaper and joint US-French-Russian letter (reftel) on
USG views following Iran's decision to enrich uranium to
twenty percent. She emphasized that while the USG remains
interested in addressing a legitimate humanitarian issue
regarding medical radioisotopes, the Iranian Government's
decision to amplify its enrichment program raises new
concerns about its nuclear intentions and its defiance of UN
Security Council resolutions. PAI Division offered no
substantive response.
2. (U) Post will continue to engage with PAI Division
regarding Iran and report on substantive discusions septel.
