1. (SBU) Post delivered reftel demarche to Director Sanjay
Rana of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs' United
Nations Political division. According to Rana, India plans
to complete deployment of one Formed Police Unit (FPU) to
Haiti by the end of March 2010 (Note: this is earlier than
the May date noted in reftel). The GOI is currently working
with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO) to
conduct a pre-deployment on-site assessment to determine the
Indian FPU's equipment needs. The UNDPKO has canceled the
assessment once due to logistical reasons: the Indian FPU
will deploy when the assessment is completed.
