--------------
PRESIDENT OBAMA
--------------
1. "ONE-YEAR OF OBAMA," editorial in January 25 right-
of-center Urdu daily, MUNSIF: "President Obama's one
year performance has been extremely disappointing. He
promised that he would withdraw American forces from
Iraq; close the most infamous Guantanamo Bay; and pull
out America from the economic crisis through his new
economic policies. But, nothing could be done. His
current policies, in fact, lack any 'change' and his
promise to establish better relations with the Islamic
world remains a dream yet to come true."
--------------
INDIA-PAKISTAN
--------------
2. "PAKISTAN'S NO-GUARANTEE LINE," editorial in January
25 centrist Hindi daily, NAVBHARAT TIMES: "Pakistan PM
Yousuf Gilani may not be able to guarantee against
another 26/11 type attack in India, but what is
stopping him from at least doig what he can? The
Pakistan government has double standards on terrorism.
It may have acted against the Taliban under U.S.
pressure, but actually it wants the Taliban to regain
strength in Afghanistan. It also wants to continue
using terrorism against India. The only common bond
between Pakistan's president, PM, Army, ISI and the
hardliners is their anti-India attitude."
3. "HALF-HEARTED EFFORTS AT PEACE," op-ed in January 25
right-of-center Hindi daily, DAINIK JAGRAN: "Why does
the U.S. viewpoint on terrorism seem to be changing
lately? It is because terrorism is posing a danger to
the U.S. itself. The jihadis know that terror attacks
in India will ignite tensions, which will shift
Pakistan's focus from Al Qaeda and the Taliban to
India. And this, in turn, will ruin U.S. plans."
4. "IRRESPONSIBLE PAKISTAN," editorial in January 27,
Bangalore-based left-of-center Kannada daily
PRAJAVANI: "The increasing terror attacks in Jammu-
Kashmir border indicate that Pakistan is not making any
effort to curb terror emanating from its soil. U.S.
Defense Secretary Gates has also cautioned Pakistan not
to test the patience of India time and again. However,
the administrators of Pakistan are behaving as if
nothing untoward is happening. The International
community should put pressure on Pakistan to not resort
to destabilizing India by using terrorists against it."
