1.(SBU) On January 22, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)
Division for North and Latin America and the Caribbean
Minister Plenipotentiary Barbara Susnik confirmed that
Slovenia donated 50,000 Euros towards the Haiti relief
effort. These funds will be channeled through the ICRC.
Slovenia is also donating 25 tents that will be able to house
up to 300 individuals. The Ministry of Defense's (MOD)
Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief
confirmed that the tents will be dispatched to Haiti through
Austria the weekend of January 23-24. The tents are valued
at 70,000 Euros and are manufactured to be used for an
extended period of time following a major natural disaster.
Slovenia's offers of assistance to date including the funds,
tents and transportation costs are valued to be at least
135,000 Euros. (Note: the MOD and MFA offered different
estimates for the transportation costs. Post is reporting
the lower estimate).
2.(SBU) Susnik told Pol-Econ Chief that Slovenia very much
appreciated U.S. and UN efforts to address the crisis. Per
reftel instructions, Pol-Econ Chief thanked Slovenia for its
contributions to date and asked Slovenia to keep the United
States informed of its future plans to assist Haiti.
According to Susnik, the Government of Slovenia (GOS) is
prepared to consider additional contributions, but will wait
for an interim assessment to better understand Haiti's future
needs. As a result, Slovenia plans to actively participate
in the international donor community's discussions on next
steps. The GOS intends to focus its future assistance on
Haiti's most vulnerable populations -- according to the MFA,
this likely means that Slovenia will focus on helping
children.
3. (U) The Head of the MFA's Development Department Alenka
Suhadolnik is Slovenia's point-of-contact on all Haiti
assistance matters. Post will continue to actively
coordinate with Slovenia on its assistance plans to Haiti's
earthquake relief efforts.
