1. (S) The Australian government will consider co-sponsoring
the request to list Al-Qa,ida in the Arabian Peninsula
(AQAP) and its two leaders under UNSCR 1267. Peter Scott,
Director of Sanctions and Transnational Crime at DFAT, said
that he would be unable to give a firm answer on whether
Australia will co-sponsor the listing request until Foreign
Minister Stephen Smith was back in the office on January 5th,
but that Australia has co-sponsored similar requests in the
past. Scott did not see why this particular case would be
any different. He assured us that the issue would be given a
high priority when the Minister returned and expected that
they would have a firm answer for us by the middle of this
week. A follow-up cable will be sent when we know what the
decision will be.
