SUBJECT: PARLIAMENT APPROVES BILATERAL TAX TREATY AND S&T
AGREEMENT
REF: BUDAPEST 75
In late night votes during its last session before adjourning
for April's national elections, the Hungarian Parliament
ratified the recently signed U.S.-Hungary Tax Treaty and the
U.S.-Hungary Science and Technology Agreement. Both
agreements were unanimously approved without abstentions.
The agreements now will go to President Laszlo Solyom for
signature. Solyom has typically signed such ratifying bills,
and we believe the unanimous approval by Parliament makes
this even more likely in this case. (Note: Although largely
pro forma, the president does have the authority to refer
bills to the Constitutional Court for an advisory opinion if
they raise constitutional questions, or return them to
Parliament for further consideration if there are other
technical concerns. End note.)
