1. (S) Post delivered the reftel host nation notification to
the MFA and MOD on January 25 regarding the planned closure
of USAREUR facilities in Mannheim, Heidelberg and Giessen.
Poloff delivered the notification to MFA Deputy Head of the
North AMERICA Division Daniel Kriener, while USAREUR liaison
officer delivered it to MOD Legal Assistant Alexander Schott
in the office of the new State Secretary Walther Otremba.
MOD will forward the notification to addressee Division Chief
Hildegard Jessen, per existing MOD procedures as she leads
the office responsible for the notification process.
2. (S) Post will report any comments from German authorities
in late February following the 30-day consultation period.
Thus far, MFA and MOD officials have expressed interest in
getting further information on the total number of local
national jobs that will be lost.
