1. (U) President Lugo announced January 14 that Paraguay
would send 56,000 kilos of food and clothing to Haiti, along with
12 search and rescue specialists from their fire department (later
increased to 13 personnel, including one photographer.) The first
5,000 kilos departed January 14 on a Brazilian Air Force plane.
2. (U) National Emergency Secretariat head Camilo Soares told
Charge January 19 that their 13-person search and rescue team left
Rio de Janeiro onboard a Brazilian aircraft mid-day January 19 to
arrive after darkness in Port-au-Prince. GOP would like their
personnel to remain onsite at the airport until the sun comes up
and sought assurances they would not be forced to immediately leave
the airport perimeter.
3. (U) The GOP is requesting help from any country with
available assets to move the remaining 51,000 kilos of their
donation.
