1. (C) During a January 14 meeting with Huseyin Dirioz,
President Abdullah Gul's Chief Foreign Policy Advisor, the
Ambassador took issue with PM Erdogan's recent public
statement equating Iran's nuclear ambitions with Israel's
alleged nuclear capability. He reminded Dirioz in the event
the world community decided on sanctions against Iran, Turkey
would be expected to join the consensus. The Ambassador told
Dirioz Turkey's policy of engagement with Iran has not worked
and the international community's patience is running out.
Dirioz assured the Ambassador that Turkey too does not want a
nuclear Iran and is working toward a diplomatic solution.
The Ambassador replied that "it's not working."
2. (C) The Ambassador urged Turkey to work toward a natural
gas deal with Azerbaijan in order to allay Azeri concerns
that they were being forgotten in the Turkey/Armenia
dialogue. Dirioz in a rejoinder said Turkey believes the
U.S. appears "not so worried about losing Azerbaijan." The
Ambassador assured him this is not the case.
3. (C) Dirioz pressed for more U.S. involvement in
stabilizing Bosnia. He stressed the need to strengthen the
hand of the Office of the High Representative in order to
keep Bosnia united. The Ambassador called for more bilateral
coordination on Bosnia between the U.S. and Turkey.
