DCM discussed the situation in Haiti January 20 with MFA
North America Director Ambassador Ahriz. DCM noted from ref B
that Algeria has decided to pledge USD 1 million - half to
the UN OCHA and half to the Clinton foundation. DCM thanked
Ahriz for Algeria's contribution, which we understood arose
from purely humanitarian considerations, given the fact that
Algeria has no material interests in Haiti or the Caribbean.
Ahriz expressed interest in how assistance was being
coordinated between the U.S., the UN, and other donors,
whether the UN Security Council would take up a Mexican
initiative to assert authority over the relief effort, and
whether there would be a future donors conference.
