Embassy Addis Ababa received an allocation of USD 40,000 for the Ambassador's Special Self-Help Program (SSH) for fiscal year FY08. Four projects were selected for funding according to Mission objectives and SSHP selection criteria. A total of 4,750 people directly benefitted from these projects and thousands more benefitted indirectly. The following is an end-of-year report for these FY08 projects. All projects were completed as of November 30, 2009 with the exception of "Uba Debretsehay," which filed a formal extension through January 31, 2010. ¶2. FY08 PROJECTS: GRANTEE NAME: Afro Ethiopia Integrated Development (AEID) AGREEMENT NUMBER: IAA-08-663-01 PROJECT TITLE: Potable Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene PROJECT OBJECTIVE: To construct for two kebeles each: two hand-dug wells, two clothes washing basins, two cattle troughs and 300 family pit latrines at a total project cost of USD 13,639.17. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: For the women and children living in Anbeshen Jihana and Liben Danjura kebeles, collecting water is a time-consuming activity. The lack of a potable water source in the area means people and livestock must rely on unprotected springs, rivers and stagnant ponds. Better access to clean water will not only improve community members' health, but also increase the amount of time women can dedicate to livelihood activities and children can devote to learning. This innovative project will provide access to clean water for 300 families in exchange for their agreement to build pit latrines at their homesteads at their own cost. FISCAL YEAR FUNDS: FY08 GRANTEE NAME: Birbisa Primary School Construction and Improvement Committee AGREEMENT NUMBER: IAA-08-663-02 PROJECT TITLE: Birbisa Primary School Construction PROJECT OBJECTIVE: To provide access to education for 582 school-aged children by constructing and furnishing two blocks of a first-cycle primary school at a total project cost of USD 21,801.01. LOCAL CONTRIBUTION: USD 5,389.17 in cash and USD 7,364.84 in local materials and labor for a total of USD 12,754.01. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: The absence of a nearby school meant that the children in this mostly- Muslim, semi-pastoralist community had to walk long distances - without adequate food and water- to get an education. The hardship forced many to quit. Having few resources but determined to see their children educated, community members were able to raise enough money to begin building a first-cycle primary school. This project will enable the community to complete construction of and furnish the school to accommodate 582 children. FISCAL YEAR FUNDS: FY08 GRANTEE NAME: Ethiopian Orthodox Church-Assela Diocese Dairy and Beekeeping Project for Orphanage. AGREEMENT NUMBER: IAA-08-663-03 PROJECT TITLE: Dairy and Beekeeping Project for Orphanage PROJECT OBJECTIVE: To increase the income of the orphanage by 15 percent by establishing a small-scale dairy farm and a small beekeeping operation at a total project cost of USD 22,799.01. LOCAL CONTRIBUTION: USD 8,655.78 in cash and USD 2,643.23 in local MUSHINGI PROGRAM END OF YEAR REPORT materials and labor for a total of USD 11,299.01 DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: Most church-run orphanages are financed by governmental and non-governmental aid organizations. When these entities stop providing assistance, however, the orphans' well-being can be jeopardized. By establishing a small-scale dairy farm and a small beekeeping operation that generates reliable income, this project will enable the diocese to continue providing services to 170 needy orphans while at the same time reducing its dependency on outside funding sources. FISCAL YEAR FUNDS: FY08 GRANTEE NAME: Uba Debretsehay Woreda Education Office AGREEMENT NUMBER: IAA-08-663-04 PROJECT TITLE: Construction of Lomete Primary Cycle School (Grades 1-4) PROJECT OBJECTIVE: To construct: 1) two blocks of four classrooms each (8 classrooms at 6m X 7m each) for Betto Kebele, Uba Debretsehay Woreda, South Omo Zone, SNNPR, 2) three rooms for administrative duties (6m X 4m each),3) one room for a teaching aid center (6m X 6m),and 4) two latrines in four rooms at a total project cost of USD 15,111.79. DECRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: There is no primary education currently available for the children living in the three kebeles of this remote and disadvantaged area. Those who do manage to attend school are forced to walk three to four hours every day. Most children are not strong enough to endure this hardship and instead do not have access to education. As a remedy, this project will construct a first-cycle primary school for grades 1-4 that will accommodate 2,500 children. LOCAL CONTRIBUTION: Local construction materials and labor worth USD 5,843.79. ESTIMATED NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES: 2,500 school-aged children living in 800 households in three kebeles.
