Authorities Expect Wave Of Infections in Fall

1. As of August 4, Austrian authorities report 169 total H1N1 cases
since the outbreak of the epidemic. 154 of these cases have been
reported since July. Only around five infections are in-country
transmissions of the virus; most persons brought the virus back
from vacation. So far, all patients have recovered within 3-5 days
and only very few developed high fever. Due to complaints from
hospitals, the authorities have lifted the requirement to
hospitalize and isolate H1N1 patients, and recommend patients stay
at home while observing precautionary measures within families.

2. Meanwhile, a leading Austrian public medicine expert and the
health spokesman of the governing Conservative Party OVP (a
physician) predicted a "H1N1 wave" in Austria during the fall season
when people return from holidays. In their "worst case" scenario,
they estimated that one third of the population (up to three million
people) could be infected. The Ministry of Health cites its
preliminary contract with U.S. company Baxter (ref B) for potential
16 million shots of the H1N1 vaccine (currently in the production
phase). The Ministry insists, however, that there are still far too
few cases to justify ordering the vaccine. (NOTE: Baxter announced
that delivery could begin in early August - END NOTE). GoA health
authorities are still testing the vaccine, and although early test
results point to good tolerance, authorization is not expected
before September. Current plans foresee that in a first phase only
persons working in the health care and public security sectors will
be vaccinated, if necessary at all.

3. According to press reports, the GoA has secured one third of
Baxter's early production capacity of the vaccine for Austria. A
health ministry spokesperson confirmed that the pre-contract
(concluded in 2005) cost EUR 33 million. If all contracted shots
are ordered, costs would amount to approximately EUR 100 million
($140 million).
