E.O. 12958: DECL: 06/22/2024
TAGS: PREL PGOV AF AU
SUBJECT: AUSTRIA: STATEMENT ON AFGHAN ELECTION
REF: STATE 63551
Classified By: Econ/Pol Counselor Dean Yap. Reason: 1.4(b) and (d).
Embassy discussed reftel concerns about statements on the
Afghan elections with Austrian MFA Asia Director Bernhard
Zimburg on June 19 and 22. Zimburg said that Austria will,
in addition to sending election observers, likely issue a
national statement underscoring the importance of respecting
the electoral process. he doubted, however, that Austria or
other EU states would say explicitly that they do not support
any candidate, arguing that calling attention to this
long-standing principle of EU policy might in fact lead some
Afghans to suspect its truth. A copy of the President's
statement was also passed to MFA spokesman
Launsky-Tieffenthal.
