Poloff delivered reftel demarche April 2 to Georg Heindl,
Head of the MFA Human Rights Department. Heindl said the GOA
was "very pleased" about the U.S. candidacy for the UNHRC and
would support it. He noted that Austria will also run for an
UNHRC seat for 2011-14. Similar positive comments arrived
from throughout the MFA. Head of the MFA Legal Department
Hermann Trauttmansdorf said he was "delighted" at the
decision. UN PermRep Thomas Mayr-Harting in a public
statement welcomed the move, saying he hoped the U.S.'s new
attitude would lead to "new possibilities in working
together."
