C O N F I D E N T I A L VIENNA 001570 SIPDIS DEPARTMENT FOR EUR/CE E.O. 12958: DECL: 12/11/2019 TAGS: PREL AF AU SUBJECT: AUSTRIA MOVES FURTHER TOWARD EUPOL SUPPORT IN AFGHANISTAN REF: A. VIENNA 1549 ¶B. STATE 122234 Classified by: Economic-Political Counselor J. Dean Yap for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d). (C) Bernhard Zimburg, MFA East Asia Director, told Polchief December 10 that the GOA has moved closer toward a decision to send 5-7 police personnel to the EUPOL mission in Afghanistan (reftel A). During a December 9 cabinet (Council of Ministers) meeting, Interior Minister Fekter agreed to inquire whether any qualified law enforcement personnel would be interested in volunteering for EUPOL, Zimburg said, citing PolDir Lehne as his source. A British Embassy contact told us he received a similar readout from the Interior Ministry. This marks a clear break from Fekter's previous refusal to deploy any personnel to Afghanistan. Zimburg said MFA officials, who have long advocated a greater GOA contribution in Afghanistan, are confident that a significant number of law enforcement officials would be interested in serving in the EUPOL mission. Zimburg added, nevertheless, that the final decision had not been made and the details still needed to be worked out. EACHO
