SUBJECT: AUSTRIA ON HANDLING OF GOLDSTONE REPORT
REF: STATE 106423
Classified By: Econ/Pol Counselor Dean Yap. Reason: 1.4(b) and (d).
(C) Econ/Pol Counselor and PolChief delivered reftel demarche
to MFA Middle East Director Friedrich Stift on Oct. 14.
Stift welcomed the U.S. message, saying that his
understanding was that the EU and U.S. positions on handling
the report -- to refer substantive discussion to Geneva in
March after allowing both the Israeli and Palestinian sides
to act on the Report's conclusions -- were substantially
identical. He agreed on the importance of close
collaboration among "like-minded" missions in New York and
Geneva and undertook to convey the U.S. points to the
Austrian missions immediately.
