1. (U) Ambassador delivered reftel invitation August 27 to
Juergen Meindl, foreign policy advisor to Chancellor Faymann,
who was out of town. Ambassador emphasized that President
Obama's decision to hold the September 24 UNSC summit on
nuclear nonproliferation reflects the high priority he places
on the issue. He said the USG was encouraging UNSC members
to participate at the level of the highest policy-making
official, and that he therefore hoped the Chancellor would be
able to attend.
2. (U) Meindl said he would contact Faymann immediately to
discuss the invitation. He noted that President Fischer
(whose position is largely ceremonial) would attend the UNGA,
and asked whether other European policy-making leaders were
being invited; the Ambassador said they were. Meindl averred
that Faymann also considers nonproliferation a top foreign
policy issue, and that the GOA is interested in developing
close ties with the Obama administration. He promised to
inform the Embassy as soon as he learned of Faymann's
decision on attendance.
