1. (S/NF) ACTION REQUEST AT PARA 3
2. (S/NF) Ambassador Wolff raised with Deputy Chief of Staff
to the Secretary-General Kim July 9 the status of the
Secretary-General's appointment of Jean-Maurice Ripert to the
position of senior Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan.
(Comment: Ripert is currently the French Permanent
Representative to the UN, and is a seasoned and well-regarded
diplomat, with whom USUN has worked very well. He would be
an excellent choice for Humanitarian Coordinator. End
Comment) Kim told Ambassador Wolff that the UN has received
mixed signals from the Pakistanis regarding their interest in
having Ripert take the job. Later, Ambassador DiCarlo raised
the Humanitarian Coordinator position with Pakistani deputy
PermRep Farukh Amil. Amil did not mention Ripert,s name,
but said Pakistan would like whoever fills this position to
have experience in the region (which Ripert does not have).
3. (S/NF) ACTION REQUEST: USUN requests that the Department
work with Embassy Islamabad to discreetly convey to the
Pakistani government 1) the importance of the Humanitarian
Coordinator position; and 2) Jean-Maurice Ripert,s strong
credentials, stature and suitability for this key position.
