1. (U) Following delivery of the invitation letter text from
President Obama to the Office of UN Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon on March 23, USUN ECOSOC Advisor met with Janos
Pasztor, Director of the Secretary-General's Climate Change
Support Team, to convey reftel talking points concerning the
USG initiative to host a meeting of the Major Economies Forum
on Energy and Climate (MEF).
2. (SBU) Pasztor indicated familiarity with the MEF proposal
given SYG Ban's recent meetings in Washington, and said the
SYG's team is already mulling the composition of the UN
representation at the April MEF preparatory meeting, although
that composition could be shaped by the meeting's eventual
agenda. Pasztor welcomed the U.S. initiative and promised to
provide updates as they become available.
