1. (SBU) According to officials at DG Transport and Energy
and DG Competition, the European Union has no plans to fund
the development of the Airbus A350XWB or to provide launch
aid.
2. (SBU) Industry contacts have heard no rumors of funding
from Brussels, but thought that there would be pressure on
national governments for state aid, particularly as
unemployment figures increase in Europe. DG Competition is
expected to oppose any such actions by member states, but in
the current economic climate, might find it difficult to
effectively counter political demands.
3. Post will continue to follow the issue and report should
any new information develop.
