SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - NUCLEAR ARMS REDUCTION AND SOMALIA
1. LEAD STORIES: Most Tuesday morning papers gave top play to the
WHO's emergency meeting on Monday on swine influenza.
2. "Japan Should Lead Nuclear Disarmament Efforts" The liberal
Mainichi wrote in an editorial (4/28): "Foreign Minister Nakasone
expressed Japan's readiness to host an international conference on
the reduction and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons... It is
significant for Japan, the only country ever to have been struck
with nuclear weapons, to play a leading role in this field. The move
should give momentum to a worldwide trend of nuclear disarmament,
which was created by the Obama administration."
3. "Nakasone Should Send His Nuclear Disarmament Message to the
World" The business-oriented Nikkei argued in an editorial (4/28):
"Foreign Minister Nakasone made a speech titled 'Conditions to Zero
- 11 Benchmarks for Worldwide Nuclear Disarmament.' This is a
comprehensive proposal to respond to President Obama's statement in
Prague. The proposal is especially significant, as it citied
specific issues and called on China to reduce its nuclear arms.
Nakasone should send his message to the world."
4. "Efforts Should Be Also Made for Reconstruction of Failed Nation"
The liberal Asahi editorialized (4/28): "How can we eliminate
rampant piracy in waters off Somalia? Although Japan and other
nations have sent their warships to the region to protect commercial
vessels, their efforts are not sufficient. We need to calm the
unrest in Somalia and establish a decent government in the nation to
eliminate the piracy there. The international community has begun to
pay attention to this effort."
