included a call by a Ministry of Finance panel on
Thursday for the government of Japan to scrap its two
trillion yen cash benefit program.
2. "Soft Approach to North Korea Should Not Be Allowed"
The liberal Mainichi editorialized (1/16): "... Senator
Hilary Clinton said during a Senate confirmation
hearing on Tuesday: 'It is our goal to bring an end to
North Korea's nuclear programs.' Stressing the
importance of nuclear nonproliferation, the senator
indicated her policy to prevent North Korea and Iran
from proliferating nuclear weapons... North Korea's
nuclear programs should be abolished in a complete and
irreversible manner. Soft approach and lenient
agreements should not be allowed."
