FOREIGN TOUR
1. LEAD STORIES: Most Thursday morning dailies gave top
play to a 15-trillion yen stimulus package compiled by
the GOJ and the ruling coalition.
2. "Obama's Diplomatic Debut Great Success" The liberal
Asahi wrote (4/9): "President Obama concluded his first
overseas trip with a surprise visit to Iraq. He
received a hero's welcome at every stopover, with his
dream-filled speeches energizing the audiences. By
making it clear his administration's stance of seeking
cooperation with other countries, the President was
successful in restoring international trust in the
U.S., which was damaged under the former Bush
administration.... However, some U.S. administration
officials are wary about expectations of him quickly
delivering on specific diplomatic issues."
3. "Nuclear Club Members Cool to Obama's Disarmament
Initiative" The liberal Mainichi stated (4/9): "Most of
the nuclear powers are decisively cool to President
Obama's vision for a 'world free of nuclear weapons.'
His Prague speech has commanded little attention in
China and France, while some Russian officials have
expressed displeasure with it."
