1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Wednesday morning
included a press conference on Tuesday by Prime
Minister Aso, during which he expressed his intention
to submit a supplementary budget to the current Diet
session.
2. "Interests of U.S. and Iran Coincide?" The liberal
Mainichi wrote from The Hague (4/1): "Representatives
of the U.S. and Iran, whose relations have been broken
off since 1980, were present at an international
conference on the stabilization of Afghanistan on
Tuesday in The Hague. Iran decided to take part in the
U.S.-led meeting, as interests of Washington and Tehran
in stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan coincide.
However, many challenges, including the issue of Iran's
nuclear development program, lie ahead for the two
nations to drastically improve their relations."
