POLITICAL CONFUSION IN PAKISTAN AND GLOBAL ECONOMIC
CRISIS
1. LEAD STORIES: Lead items on Monday morning included
Sunday's fire that gutted the home of the late postwar
Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida.
2. "U.S. Impatient for Dialogue with Iran" On President
Obama's call for dialogue with Iran, the conservative
Sankei wrote (3/22): "President Obama's videotaped
remarks to Iran represent a flexible approach toward
Tehran. At the same time, they also apparently reflect
a difficult situation facing the U.S., in which
Washington must urgently address expedited nuclear
development by Iran."
3. "Aid Must Be Used to Ensure Stability" Concerning
growing political instability in Pakistan, the liberal
Asahi asserted in an editorial (3/22): "The Obama
administration is preparing a strategy to stabilize
Pakistan and Afghanistan in order to remove threats of
international terrorism. An international conference is
also scheduled in Tokyo in April on the stabilization
of Pakistan. Continued political turmoil in Islamabad
could make these international efforts meaningless.
Pakistani President Zardari and opposition leader
Sharif must take international concern seriously."
4. "EU Rebuffs U.S. Call for More Spending" The
business-oriented Nikkei editorialized (3/22): "Germany
and other EU members dismissed a U.S. call for
additional government spending on the ground that
fiscal discipline should not be readily eased until the
effects of existing stimulus measures become
clearer.... The schism between the U.S. and the
Europeans appears to be very wide. The most pressing
agenda in the upcoming G20 financial summit in London
will be how the participants can coordinate their
policies in order to halt economic slowdown. The G20
leaders must overcome their differences to be able to
strike a constructive agreement."
