1. LEAD STORIES: Most Thursday morning papers led with
follow-ups on the recent arrest of a top aide to DPJ
President Ozawa for allegedly violating the Political
Funds Control Law.
2. "U.S. to Send Senior Diplomats to Syria" The
business-oriented Nikkei's correspondent report from
Washington wrote (3/5): "Senior officials of the Obama
administration will visit Syria as early as this week
to hold preparatory talks between the governments of
the U.S. and Syria... This would bring a shift from the
Bush administration's foreign policy, which was hostile
to Damascus. The Obama administration's approach to
Syria appears to be aimed at promoting the Middle East
peace process by separating Syria from Iran. If the
U.S. can draw in Syria to the U.S. side, Washington
will be able to have the advantage in its nuclear talks
with Tehran by isolating Iran."
3. "China Trying to Increase Naval Capability in Deep
Sea" The moderate Yomiuri ran a correspondent report
from Beijing saying (3/5): "China's defense budget for
2009 will increase by 14.9 percent from the previous
year, marking the 21st straight year of double-digit
growth. China's efforts to increase its naval
operational capability in deep seas and to accelerate
'computerization' in space programs appear to lie
behind the increase. The growth in China's military
spending illustrates Beijing's intention to become a
global military superpower."
