¶1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Friday morning
included President Obama's budget plan for fiscal 2010
and GM's announcement of a $30.9 billion loss in 2008.
¶2. "Even Satellites are Unacceptable" The liberal
Mainichi editorialized (2/27): "North Korea announced
its preparations for a 'satellite' launch... A UN
Security Council resolution on North Korea calls for
suspension of 'all activities related to (its)
ballistic-missile programs' in addition to nuclear
experiments and test-firings of its missiles. Both a
ballistic-missile and a satellite rocket 'fly' by the
same technology. Therefore, the governments of the U.S.
and South Korea expressed the view that Pyongyang's
launch of a satellite will violate the UN resolution,
as the move is related to its missile programs. A U.S.
State Department spokesman called on the DPRK to
concentrate on denuclearization. This is the right
argument. North Korea has challenged the world order
and threatened its neighbors. A rocket becomes a
nuclear missile if loaded with a nuclear bomb. North
Korea should abolish its nuclear programs before
seeking the 'peaceful use' of space. At this time, we
accept neither a missile nor a satellite."
