SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - U.S. BAILOUT PLAN AND
ISRAELI ELECTIONS
1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Friday morning included
the Chinese military's plans to construct its first
nuclear-powered AIRCRAFT CARRIER after 2020.
2. "U.S. Bailout Plan Unsatisfactory" The liberal
Mainichi editorialized (2/13): "A new financial
stabilization plan revealed by the Obama administration
causes 'doubts' rather than giving 'answers.' As there
had been high expectations for a new plan, the
disappointment about the lack of specifics was great...
The Obama administration should put forward specific
measures as soon as possible and make its maximum
efforts to convince both the American people and
Congress."
3. "Election Results Generate Concern for U.S." The
liberal Tokyo Shimbun wrote in an editorial (2/13):
"... The results of the Israeli elections generated
serious concern for U.S. President Obama, who has
indicated the importance of dialogue with the Muslim
world and has taken swift steps by dispatching a
special envoy to the Middle East. His diplomatic
ability will be tested. We wonder what kind of
leadership the U.S. will exercise as the biggest
supporter of Israel."
