SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - PRESIDENT OBAMA IN
CHINA
1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page stories on Tuesday morning
included President Obama's town hall meeting with
Chinese students on Monday in Shanghai.
2. "President Obama's Position on U.S.-China
Cooperation Clear" The business-oriented Nikkei wrote
from Shanghai (11/17): "President Obama took part in a
town hall meeting with Chinese students on Monday in
Shanghai, his first stop in China. He stressed the
importance of the U.S. and China working together on
global issues by saying: 'The problem of climate change
cannot be solved without cooperation between our two
countries.' While indirectly criticizing the Chinese
government's Internet regulations, the President did
not go into detail on Tibet and other issues that have
caused friction between the two nations. The Obama
administration's position to seek U.S.-China
cooperation was made clear from the beginning of the
President's tour of China."
