(C) EMBASSY Political Officer delivered Reftel demarche to
Deputy Directors Seitoku Kawakami and Makoto Tanabe of MOFA's
Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Division. Kawakami said
that Japan's plans for the upcoming 3rd Committee have not
changed and that they should be able to "closely cooperate"
with the United States on both the country-specific
resolutions and thematic resolutions. Kawakami added they had
not finished deliberating on the Defamation of Religion
resolution but "hoped a consensus could be reached on this
document similar to what was achieved in the Human Rights
Council." Tanabe added that passage of the resolution on the
human rights situation in the DPRK was very important to
Japan.
