SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - NORTH KOREA AND IRAN
¶1. LEAD STORIES: Tuesday morning's Tokyo Shimbun led with a report
on declassified MOD data regarding ASDF airlift operations in Iraq
between July 2006 and December 2008, saying that 67 percent of
transported personnel during that period were American service
members.
¶3. "Kim Jong Il holds Talks with Chinese Premier" On Chinese Premier
Wen's meeting with DPRK leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang Monday
evening, the liberal Asahi speculated from Seoul (10/6): "Unless Kim
Jong Il makes a bold concession, the significance of the Six-Party
Talks, which were first launched in August 2003, is bound to decline
further.... Even if Kim Jong Il made comments on denuclearization in
his talks with Wen, such remarks would have been abstract ones aimed
at creating an international atmosphere conducive to the U.S.
holding dialogue with North Korea. Even if Kim Jong Il mentioned the
possibility of returning to the Six-Party Talks, it is likely that
he asked the U.S., Japan, and South Korea to relax UN sanctions as a
precondition."
¶4. "Iran Should Quickly Implement Agreement" On a recent accord
between Iran and the P5 plus Germany concerning low-level enriched
uranium produced by Iran, the top-circulation, moderate Yomiuri
editorialized (10/6): "We are not completely pleased [with the
accord], given that concessions by Iran in the past ended up
allowing it to buy time. Concerns also remain that the agreement has
provided Tehran with a justification to proceed with uranium
enrichment.... Now is the time for internationally-isolated Iran to
demonstrate a policy turnaround. A quick implementation of the
accord will be evidence of a change in policy."
