1. LEAD STORIES: Most Friday morning papers gave top
play to Japan Post's plan to temporarily freeze its
planned sale of its resort facilities.
2. "Obama Administration to Face Big Challenge on
Afghanistan" The moderate Yomiuri's Washington
correspondent wrote (1/30): "President Obama met with
Secretary of Defense Gates and top military officials
on Wednesday to discuss the situation in Afghanistan
and the surge of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. However,
there is no guarantee that the surge strategy, which is
based on the success in Iraq, will dramatically improve
public security in Afghanistan that is rapidly
deteriorating. The Obama administration is set to face
a big challenge."
