CHANGE SUMMIT
1. LEAD STORIES: All Thursday morning papers gave top or front-page
play to the summit meeting between President Obama and Prime
Minister Hatoyama on Wednesday in New York.
2. "Additional U.S. Commitment Needed" The liberal Mainichi
editorialized (9/24): "As President Obama reconfirmed in his speech
in Cairo and on other occasions, the peaceful 'coexistence' of
Israel and Palestine is necessary for Middle East peace. We are
hoping for further commitment from the U.S. and flexible responses
from both sides."
3. "Words Should Be Backed by Concrete Plans" The liberal Mainichi
argued in an editorial (9/24): "President Obama expressed his
resolve to promote renewable energy during the UN summit on climate
change. However, he failed to mention specific goals, and it is
unclear what kind of international responsibility the U.S. is
prepared to fulfill. While admitting that the U.S. has been slow to
respond to the issue of climate change, the President called for
emerging nations' efforts to reduce gas emissions. China is on the
same level as the U.S. as a major emitter of greenhouse gases, and
President Hu presented a more ambitious target than in the past....
We hope that the leaders of each nation will exercise their
political leadership to back the statements they made in the summit
with concrete plans."

liberal Asahi wrote in an editorial (9/24): "President Obama, who
along with the Chinese leader holds the key to international
discussion on climate change, expressed his resolve by saying that
the future of our planet depends on a global commitment to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. However, he failed to make a bold new
proposal to jumpstart the international discussion.... As time is
running out, a breakthrough should be achieved through negotiations
at the level of national leaders."
