U.S.-JAPAN SUMMIT
¶1. LEAD STORIES: Most Tuesday morning dailies front-paged Prime
Minister Hatoyama's departure yesterday for the U.S. for a series of
summits with President Obama and other world leaders.
¶2. "High Expectations for U.S. Leadership" On the upcoming UN
climate change conference in New York, the liberal Mainichi
editorialized (9/22): "Success in preventing climate change depends
on how much the U.S. and China, the world's two largest emitters of
greenhouse gases, can reduce emissions, given that together they
account for 40 percent of global emissions. In this regard,
expectations for President Obama are high.... While it is uncertain
whether the U.S. Senate will pass legislation on global warming, we
would like President Obama to demonstrate his leadership."
¶3. "Revision of Election Pledges Needed to Uphold Alliance" The
conservative Sankei argued in an editorial on the scheduled
one-on-one meeting between Prime Minister Hatoyama and President
Obama (9/22): "PM Hatoyama has stated clearly that the main purpose
of the summit with President Obama is to build a relationship of
trust. We would like him to uphold the bilateral alliance so that
the U.S. and Japan can find common interests. Hatoyama's essay,
which was published before his inauguration, was considered by some
as 'anti-American.' The prime minister must not forget that the U.S.
administration is attaching great importance to the upcoming
summit.... PM Hatoyama needs to revise his election promises that
run the risk of undermining the U.S.-Japan alliance."
