CHINA RELATIONS
1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Wednesday morning
included an Israeli attack on Tuesday on three UN
schools sheltering civilians in Gaza that killed at
least 45 people.
2. "U.S. Should Stop Israel" The liberal Mainichi
editorialized (1/7): "... No country or organization,
including the UN, seems to be able to immediately stop
the military action by Israel. The U.S., which is
expected to play a role as world police, defends its
ally by saying that Israel has decided to protect
itself. However, the actions of Israel cannot receive
approval from a humanitarian point of view... Hamas
should immediately halt its attacks, but Israel should
also stop its own offensive to avoid additional
casualties... The U.S., an ally of Israel, should
convince Jerusalem to stop its military actions."
3. "Japan-China Gas Field Development Agreement Should
Be Implemented in Calm Manner" The business-oriented
Nikkei argued in an editorial (1/7): "... The
Japan-China agreement on their joint development of gas
fields in the East China Sea states that the two
nations will make the East China Sea an ocean of peace,
cooperation, and friendship. It is natural for the
Japanese government to lodge a protest against China
for its unilateral development of the Kashi Field, the
move that does not serve the purpose of the
agreement... In order not to escalate the dispute, the
governments of Japan and China should seek a consensus
in a calm manner. The two nations should immediately
hold a working-level meeting to realize the agreement."
