1. LEAD STORIES: All Wednesday morning papers gave top play to the
planned election today of DPJ President Hatoyama as the nation's
93rd prime minister by both houses of the Diet.
2. "Iran Trying to Avert Sanctions" On Iran's likely talks
concerning its nuclear development with UN Security Council members
plus Germany in early October, the business-oriented Nikkei wrote
(9/16): "By holding talks with the six countries, Iran is trying to
head off enhanced sanctions, which the U.S. and Europe are calling
for. Additional stress on the domestic economy by stronger sanctions
would undermine the foundation of President Ahmadinejad, who is
preoccupied with trying to settle the confusion that has continued
since the presidential election. By showing a positive stance toward
dialogue, Tehran is also hoping to drive a wedge into the six-nation
group by enticing Russia and China to come over to its side."
