1. LEAD STORIES: Asahi gave top play to a report from Washington
claiming that the White House studied the possibility of then
President Ford visiting Hiroshima when he visited Japan in 1974.
2. "Climate Change and Nuclear Disarmament to Be Focus of UN General
Assembly" The business-oriented Nikkei wrote from New York (9/15):
"The UN General Assembly, for which national leaders will gather at
the UN headquarters, will open on September 15. The two major issues
to be discussed at this year's meeting will be climate change and
nuclear disarmament. President Obama, who will make his UN debut at
the event, will present the opening remarks for a climate change
summit and seek the adoption of a resolution as chair of the summit
on nuclear disarmament. Much attention will be paid to how opinions
can be coordinated between the U.S., which wants to take the
initiative, and emerging nations and nations developing nuclear
weapons, which have conflicting interests."
