ATTACKS
1. LEAD STORIES: There were no papers
published on
Friday morning due to a press holiday.
However
broadcasters reported on Israel's
continuing air
attacks on Gaza.
2. "No Mediator for Gaza" The moderate
Yomiuri's
correspondent reported from Cairo the
following (1/1):
"... The U.S., Europe, and Arab nations
belatedly began
their efforts to create a breakthrough to
the situation
in Gaza, which has been under air attacks
by Israel.
However, the start of their mediation
efforts may
ironically demonstrate the absence of
leaders who can
move the diplomacy in the Middle East
forward, as both
Israel and Hamas continue to refuse a
ceasefire...
Although President Bush looked for a
possibility of a
ceasefire following his separate telephone
talks on
December 30 with Palestinian Authority
President Abbas
and Egyptian President Mubarak, it appears
difficult
for the outgoing president, who has taken
a hostile
policy toward Hamas, to exercise his
influence over
conciliation."
