SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - U.S.-CHINA STRATEGIC AND ECONOMIC
DIALOGUE
1. LEAD STORIES: Monday morning's Mainichi gave top play to an
interview with a crew member of the Enola Gay, which dropped an
atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
2. "U.S., Japan Need to Exercise Power to Lead" The conservative
Sankei editorialized (8/3): "The U.S. and China held the first round
of their strategic and economic dialogue, at which cabinet ministers
from both countries comprehensively discussed economic, political,
and security issues. Although the two nations reached agreements on
such issues as policy coordination on the economic front and the
resumption of military exchanges, not much substantial progress was
made on the diplomatic and security fronts. It should probably be
said that the results of the talks fell short of signifying that a
"G2 system," under which the U.S. and China set world trends, has
been launched. Rather, it is necessary for the U.S. and Japan to
further exercise their power to lead in order to call on China to
take responsible actions."
