1. Representatives from the NGO "Japan Campaign to Ban
Landmines" (JCBL) visited the embassy July 16 to request the
U.S. accede to the Mine Ban Treaty. The JCBL presented 1,500
butterfly-shaped cards from Osaka residents calling on the
U.S. to join the treaty. Embassy representative advised that
he would relay the request to Washington.


2. The JCBL was founded in 1997 and is one of the NGOs under
an umbrella organization, the International Campaign to Ban
Landmines (ICBL),working to eradicate antipersonnel mines.
The ICBL was founded in 1991, and was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1997 for its achievements.
