1. LEAD STORIES: Thursday morning papers gave front-page play to the
G-8 statement on the world economy.
2. "High-handed Policy Will Not Solve Problem in Uighur" The
moderate Yomiuri editorialized (7/9): "The bloody riots in the
Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region showed the depth of ethnic
conflict in China.... President Hu probably returned home from Italy
suddenly before the opening of the G-8 summit because he, as the
leader of the Chinese Communist Party and government, took the
situation very seriously.... The violence [in Uighur] indicated the
limits of the view held by the Chinese leadership that protests by
ethnic minorities will decrease if their living standards are
improved. The Hu administration, which will celebrate the 60th
anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China
this fall, is becoming increasingly nervous about public order in
the country. Following its handling of the Tibet issue, Beijing will
be urged to review its high-handed policy toward ethnic
minorities."
