CITIES

1. LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Tuesday morning included the arrest
on Monday of the presidents of three Tokyo trading firms for an
alleged attempt to illegally export to Myanmar on behalf of North
Korea a device believed to be necessary for developing long-range
ballistic missiles.

2. "Turning Point for Independence and Stability of Iraq" The
business-oriented Nikkei editorialized (6/30): "The withdrawal of
U.S. forces from Iraqi cities is a major step. After six years of a
war started by the Bush administration, Iraq is approaching an
important turning point for its independence and stability.... There
are many challenges in achieving independence, restoration, and
stability. In addition to the reinforcement of Iraqi security forces
to contain terrorism, the political process for easing sectarian and
ethnic confrontations will become increasingly important."
